Communities’ Progress
implementing
best practices based on model development
principles
Communities are beginning to implementing best practices that allow
them to grow and develop with less impact to water quality and
quantity.
These best practices are based on the model development principles
compiled by the Center for Watershed Protection. Review the Best
Practices page on this website to learn more about these model
development principles.

Knox County
Knox County’s Stormwater Management Coordinator conducted the Knox
County Site Planning Roundtable. Approximately 45 community leaders considered
the model development principles and in a series of meetings made recommendations
to the County. Knox County staff and their contractor AMEC are finalizing
these recommendations for adoption by elected officials.
Lakeland
Lakeland has adopted a buffer ordinance that meets the intent of
the model principles for buffer preservation and maintenance.

Shelby County
In a Multiple Jurisdiction Review workshop, planners
and public works officials for jurisdictions in Shelby
County have used the
COW to evaluate their Codes and Ordinances together. Since
their review,
they are working
together to recommend benchmark development rules that
will enable
Shelby County communities to protect their water resources
while planning for
growth. Their recommendations should result in development
rules that are enforceable and acceptable. Recommendations
will be
made to the
County Mayor’s equitable growth policy initiative
in 2005. Represented jurisdictions include:
• City of Bartlett
• City of Germantown
• City of Lakeland
• City of Memphis
• City of Millington
• Shelby County
• Town of Collierville
